Belvedere Middle School

Belvedere Middle School

East Los Angeles, California

Built in 1924, Belvedere Middle School has been a landmark in the Boyle Heights neighborhood for over 100 years.

SALT’s transformation of the 12-acre campus redefines the school as both a civic anchor and a climate-resilient landscape for outdoor learning.

Spaces to Connect Outdoors

The school had expanded over many years, adding buildings and facilities to support a growing community. The campus became fragmented, with inadequate gathering space and major elevation changes that made it difficult to navigate. Outdoor areas were hot and unwelcoming due to the lack of shade and planting.

Working with NAC and Hensel Phelps, SALT created a level central courtyard with shaded spaces for classes and socializing. The courtyard is now the heart of the school: students cross paths between classes and the community gathers for performances, celebrations, and informal meetings.

Learning from Nature on an Urban Campus

A new central paseo acts as a spine that connects the campus. The paseo’s paving, developed in collaboration with NAC, features words and symbols inlaid in brass that evoke themes of nature, sustainability, and education.

New outdoor classrooms, a stage, and a student garden bring learning outdoors. The transformation also added new outdoor sports facilities and educational graphics that illustrate environmental stewardship.

The design increases permeable surface area and introduces stormwater management strategies. Predominantly native, drought-tolerant plantings and tree-shaded gathering spaces create a welcoming, comfortable environment that changes with the seasons.

"This school community deserves to have new facilities because of the great potential of our students. It sends a message to students that you are valued."
