HOUGHTON PARK

Working alongside RA-DA and the City of Long Beach, SALT reimagined the Houghton Park Community Center as an active hub and event space that offers increased and updated amenities to the broader multi-generational neighborhood who have valued the park as a central part of the North Long Beach community since 1924.

The original center has played a crucial role for neighborhood residents of all ages. Much of the design process involved community outreach and engagement to ensure the new spaces best served the local public.

“Many people refer to the park as the heart of the Uptown community. This is and has been the facility for so many people.”

- Vice Mayor Rex Richardson

The LEED Silver project includes multipurpose space, a new gym, parking upgrades, and new restrooms. Outdoor areas provide flexible space for classes, events, and gatherings both large and small. The landscape is designed to envelope the community center in quiet, shaded walkways flanked by dense, water-smart plantings. A private central courtyard with wood benches and delicate planting provides space for events. Custom poured concrete furnishings create an environment that is both comfortable and resilient.
